The area lost one of its living treasures on December 21st. Mirl Orebaugh was a walking encyclopedia of high desert knowledge. He knew the history of practically every family, business, and structure along the Mojave from the mountains to Baker. As I looked around at the memorial service it struck me hed outlived all his friends and contemporaries save Dave Polsons mom. Thanks to Robert Starbuck for meeting with Mirl a few months back and preserving some of the history of the area. Thanks also to all of you and your parents/grandparents over the era who counted him as a friend.
