The argan (Argania spinosa) woodlands cover about 950,000 ha in Southern Morocco, mostly between the High Atlas and the Anti-Atlas mountains, in a region bordering the Sahara desert. They constitute a unique resource in this semi-arid to arid environment, and have long been central to the livelihood of local populations, providing wood for construction, tool-making heating and cooking; fodder for goats and camels; shade for rain-fed crops; and an oil that is now a famous cosmetic ingredient in the western world. The argan woodlands, however valuable they may be, are widely perceived to have receded strongly during the last decades, among other things due to the expansion of irrigated crops, logging, and overgrazing
