The army is on 24-hour standby and some Air Force staff have been warned to keep their cellphones with them at all times as South Africa holds its breath over the health of former president Nelson Mandela. Soldiers were warned 10 days ago, when Madiba fell ill, that the army’s contingency plan was activated. The details of the plan have been classified “top secret” and won’t be released. The defence force section responsible for setting up infrastructure has already been deployed in Eastern Cape to assist with the supply of water and electricity. About 1 200 soldiers will be deployed if Mandela passes on. This includes all flights to be undertaken and the receiving of VIP guests. This morning, Mandela’s grandchildren Ndaba, Zenani, Mandla and his wife Graca Machel visited the ailing statesman at the Pretoria hospital where he is being treated.
