The article I read says this guy told police he loved his chickens as we do our pets. So, is he saying that his chickens were pets? (I know people do have them as such; not discounting the possibility). BUT, if they were pets... how could he put a price on them? I know more people than who have pets that could never put a monetary value on any of them. Pets* are irreplacable. Sounds to me like they were just livestock, and while he may have rights because they killed does NOT make them pets. Not like the dogs in this case. And while he may have the right to defend his property, he does NOT have the right to destroy someone elses. (Sadly, and maybe fortunate in this case, the dogs are YOUR property. Which he damaged and destoyed. I hope his a $$ goes to jail. For sure everyone will know his lame a $$ and name. Sorry for your loss.....
