The article attached was published in the Wall Street Journal and is by (professor) Walter Russell Mead, someone who (as he tells us) voted for Obama. He describes how US policy has failed to grasp basic realities about the political cultures and dynamic of Middle Eastern states, has backed the likes of Erdogan in Turkey and Morsi in Egypt, and has as a result lost much of the influence it enjoyed — basically it failed. In the process, states like Saudi Arabia and Israel have spun off into more independent courses; it would be interesting to see the next chapter.
