The article that will appear in the Columbus Gazette regarding our status after 5 weeks: 2013 XC “Cats” near 1000 miles in Summer Challenge! You may be a cross country team if you run farther in a week than your bus travels for meets. The Columbus Community “Wildcats” proved this again this week, as they continued their awesome summer attack of the streets of Columbus Junction, with 30 runners making a contribution to the current total. After five weeks of the “Summer XC Challenge – Run to Fort Dodge”, they have now accumulatively logged 977.7 miles. At the 5-week point, the second half goal is for the individuals to increase mileage, and intensity level as they prepare for the August 31st start of competition at Cedar Rapids Prairie High School. Several team members represented Columbus in the Grandview 5k run on July 4th. Additional summer training opportunities will be the 5K runs at Wapello, Conesville, and Muscatine. After another great team performance in week five, the top seven girls’ mileage leaders are: Kylie Marin with 76.0 miles, followed closely by Claire Hamilton with 75.0 miles, Taylor Hills 61.9 miles, Ashley Canny 49.6 miles, Grace Chapman 43.9 miles, Jenessa Carpenter (8th Grade) 39.5 miles, and Alondra Solis 39.3 miles. Closely challenging for the number seven position are Jasmine Alvarez with 39.2 miles, and Kelli Roush 36.1 miles. The top seven boys are led by: Eli Sents with 81.1 miles, Josh Keller 58.5 miles, Adrian Santos 44.3 miles, Anthony Garcia 40.0 miles, Dalton Howell 35.4 miles, Kevin Fernandez 24.5 miles, and Ben Smith (8th Grade) 16.0 miles. Watch for our weekly progress reports as these student athletes and their coaches challenge themselves to achieve high team goals – They will represent you well! “To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the Gift.” – The legendary Steve Prefontaine.
