The artists are having their say. The steaming services are defending themselves. Is there are silent “voice” here? Where are the record companies in this argument? I’m not looking for a villain. I’m looking for a hero. Right now that’s Thom Yorke who has dared to stand up to Spotify and pin-pointed just how little recording artists receive from that streaming service. He’s in a position to fight. Most artists are not. From the beginning of the whole non-physical era of music - downloads, file sharing and now streaming – I’ve contended that it’s Thom Yorke’s Radiohead and Pearl Jam who will lead us to the new music industry model. If there is a new model of course. When the music industry as we knew it started to unravel they were the acts still in a position of power to not need the industry in order to survive. Radiohead and Pearl Jam are the canaries in the mineshaft. If they die everyone dies. The record companies let iTunes reduce the income from music. For whose sake? The record companies have made the licence deals with the streaming services. For whose sake? Prince once painted the word “slave” on his cheek. Is that where we are at the moment? Who is in charge of music? When this is over, whichever way it goes, we won’t have Thom Yoke to blame.
