The assertion that GMO foods are safe is one that Monsanto also makes. The company deals with the question of the safety of its seeds on its FAQ webpage. According to the page, it follows all the current regulations put forth by agencies like the FDA, the USDA, and the EPA. However, these findings notwithstanding, one of the studies did also state that this process isn’t completely understood. As with many things of this nature, more studies will be required to determine what kinds of outcomes are possible from the consumption and absorption of these DNA materials. Moreover, Dr. Mercola has a few things to say, at least indirectly, about the effects of GMO seeds. Monsanto’s current crop of seeds has been designed to withstand what is maybe the company’s most famous product, RoundUp. These crops get doused with a healthy dose of the pesticide, because they are engineered to withstand high doses of it. The key ingredient in RoundUp is glyphosate. The presence of this substance in the body has been attributed to conditions like autism, cancer, MS, and other health issues. It isn’t just the plant DNA that makes it into the body; chemicals via these plants do too. Of particular interest to Dr. Mercola and also to the scientists studying the effects of these DNA substances in the body is the issue of gut bacteria. More specifically, the question is how the presence of this DNA as well as chemicals like glyphosate affect the good gut bacteria. On the one hand, there is some evidence that under certain conditions, materials like plant DNA can alter the beneficial bacteria in the stomach. The assimilation of this genetic material into the gut was limited by the means in which it was introduced, which was “via a stoma to a colostomy bag,” according to NCBI.
