The atmosphere is pregnant with change Sitting by the shade of the Motsibi tree on the river banks of the Boteti river i saw fish, small small combing the very edges of the river. Big fish that swallow these fishlings swim within the central depths of the river causing them to move outward to safety. I asked the young man throwing his line into the river what he thought of the small fish. Too small for a meal,he said and the big fish could not swim to the shores in pursuit of these fishlings lest they be exposed and nabbed by the fisherman. When i finally decided to forget about the cow i had gone to check at the drinking point, i rose and kicked some elephant dung as i recalled how the riverside used to be dotted with fields that sustained the people. Those were the good times when as young children we feared being satisfied with full and aching stomachs more than anything. People were called from afar and offered bundles of the harvest or cooked food without even asking. Those were the good old days. But then again, be not fooled into believing that all was as appeared, not at all. There was a possibility that the giver had a child wherever the traveler was headed to. The good gesture could have probably been a signal that tell them we are fine, or even worse, the food could have been poisoned, yet given with much love and enthusiasm. Batswana know the art of deception quite well. So think not that they see not through the games being played right in front of their eyes. They know that all the talk about Linah Mohohlos ever cooked books showing an improving economy are an election gimmick. They also know very well that hitting your enemy and then pretending he hit you first is an old game they played as they chased each other swimming on the waters of the Boteti river. They still question why you have unilaterally decided to fence them off their river while you extended your Leroo La Tau lodge by so doing. They are angry, but they wont tell you. The atmosphere is pregnant with change, but they wont tell you. They too fear for their lives for the first time since their early childhoods. The spilling of blood to them is a no go. They have not forgotten the painful history of murder at the royal house, they had thought it had all ended with that era. Now more than ever the elders are ready to rebel against the dawning era of brutality. At least now they have the vote, making you vulnerable to their wisdom. A killer would never say i did it, and the people know that just too well. Hopping around apologizing to a man who walked out on a corpse during a funeral unprovoked instead of reprimanding him didnt go down well with them either, you days up there are getting numbered.
