Painting an Indian monarch -- or a certain family -- in less than glowing colours can get you killed. Among the outpouring of shock and disgust at the mad Islamists carnage, there have been shades of victim-blaming, including from the Financial Times, and Kiran Bedi. Kiran Bedi, former senior police officer, now a prominent politician, tweeted just hours after the attack by masked gunmen that killed Charb, the editor at Charlie Hebdo, and many of his staff: France Terror-Shoot-Out sends a message: why deliberately provoke or poke? As an Assamese my understanding is religious identity is not something every individual can easily let go off, as religion shapes a number of personal thoughts, beliefs and actions. However, religious identity is not an individuals only identity, either. In a plural society, everyone has plural identities and in a diverse, multicultural, secular country like India, it is our Indian identity that is foremost and binds us all together under the tricolour. Asking individuals to completely forget their religious identity is asking them to forget the reason behind many of their core beliefs and may not be the best approach. The key, rather, lies in making the individual understand that there are other identities that are as important, especially in todays context. The first step towards this would be to stop referring to an individual by their religious identity, first, like my one muslim friend advised me. He pointed out that he ought to be condemning the attack as a human being first and not as a Muslim. As in the case with the Charlie Hebdo incident, He condemn the attack as a human being and yes, also as a Muslim, because Islam taught him tolerance and non-violence. But at the same time, as a Muslim, he would never read Charlie Hebdo or support the magazine as he believe it pokes fun at one of his core identities. Pressure from the corporate world, political party actually more on journalists in India nowadays. With the virtual world becoming more and more entangled in our daily realities, it also underscores that in this new era of lone -- or in this case, pack -- wolf terrorist, no one is safe. Any nut job with an Internet connection can avenge whatever offence needs avenging in his twisted brain. With WhatsApp at his disposal, the bigot doesnt have to physically deface a statue to instigate killings. A few lines on a revered figure is all it takes. And as a techie from Pune found out, even not being involved is sometimes not any protection. If your faith -- or a religion, country, political party, leader, or whatever -- depends on a blemish-free-rosy depiction of it, you have a problem. And if you ponder over the lessons for India from the attack on Charlie Hebdo, unfortunately, that problem is a rising one. And ask yourself whether a publication like Charlie Hebdo -- which showed French President Francois Hollande with his p*nis out when his affair was revealed -- would be allowed in India, where Praveen Swami has gone from national security guru to traitor in the span of two news reports that differ from the governments version of the terror boat from Pakistan. And to all those singing We told you so about Muslims after the Paris attack, please read Nicholas Kristofs excellent column ( nytimes/2015/01/08/opinion/nicholas-kristof-lessons-from-the-char lie-hebdo-shooting-in-paris.html?_r=0 )in The New York Times, ponder over Narendra Dabholkars life, and M F Husains death in exile. So rise up for the right to offend. Let there be no holy cow, person, religion, ideology that cannot be criticised, ridiculed, parodied, lampooned. Thats what differentiates you from the bastards who entered Charlie Hebdo. aamar PM jetia US goisil, USa gom paisil je PM religious norms karone fast korise tothapio chief guest PMk dinner invite kori bakibure PMr homukhot dinner korile. jodi akhon Muslim country leadera Ramjan mahor fast kore tetia USr dom aase neki dinner invite koribole.
