The exact number of Mujahids involved in the attack is not known. “But the way these ultras, believed to be from Pakistan, killed four security personnel on the road outside our Army camp makes us believe that they entered the camp from the gate through the road which is not made of concrete boundary, a senior army officer said. Among the dead is a lieutenant colonel Sankalp Kumar of 24-Punjab regiment. “Six other soldiers have also died. We have killed three Mujahids so far and the operation against them is still going on, he said. Quick Response Teams (QRTs) were rushed to the site after the Mujahids attacked the camp. The Mujahids opened fire at one of the QRT vehicles on the main road, killing an officer and two soldiers, a police officer told Us. The three policemen killed in the gunbattle have been identified as Assistant Sub Inspector Mohammad Akbar Lone, head constable Abdul Majid and constable Sanjay Singh; all of them are from Kashmir. A senior counter-insurgency police officer told Us that the group may have recently crossed over to this side of Kashmir and divided themselves into two groups. “While one group entered the Army camp, other engaged the troops at the gate,” he said. The infiltrators used small arms and followed it with UBGL fire, an Army officer said. The attack comes days ahead of Modis visit to the state on December 8, where he is scheduled to address an election rally in Srinagar, the state’s capital. Uri goes to polls on December 9. The Srinagar-Muzaffarabad bus service and the trade between two parts of Kashmir are carried out through this point of LoC in Kashmir valley. There are reports of a fire from the camp but fire tenders are unable to go inside because of the ongoing gun battle, a source in the police told Us. Sources said one assistant sub inspector of police was also injured who was airlifted to a hospital.
