The attacks on Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa over farm subsidies are manipulative and deceptive. Most of these government payments were CRP which is an environmental policy that compensates land-owners for setting aside areas for wildlife habitat and to improve water quality. Those amounts were paid over the 15 years examined (95-09) to four different farms owned by various relatives and would not have come near the amount of taxes paid by those farms. It is not unusual nor excessive. My family and every other Midwest farmer in the vicinity of a wetland area has received similar compensation. Furthermore, none of this has a thing to do with her honest story about growing up struggling. Agricultural families during the Carter administration in the late 70s and into the early 80s of the Reagan administration were destitute due to grain embargoes, sky-high interest and low commodity prices. Just listen to any Mellencamp song to verify. Feel free to disagree with policy and facts, even with personalities; but contrived attacks like this simply reinforce the public view that both sides of the aisle smell like the hog lots on the Ernst farmstead.
