The author of this article was assaulted while on field research. Her advice to young women: Teach them to manage their dreams. They need to know that daring to act upon their dreams of science can be both a beautiful and a dangerous thing. I can appreciate the apparent wisdom in this advice. But, please, tell me there is more we can do to prevent such life-crushing incidents. Her academic community should have provided training and safety protocols before the trip which may have prevented this rape. The fact that she knew of no resources provided by her employer in the moments days, weeks, and years following this brutal attack is tragic, but it does not need to remain the norm. I hope administrators and so called Human Resources personnel wake up. Storytelling is not enough. Women should have the ability to consider field work anywhere a man can safely go. (It also would also not surprise me if men have experienced assault while on field research). No one should have to turn away from their specialization in order to protect their bodies from assault and their minds from the years of suffering and workplace fear this scientist endured and continues to endure.
