The author wishes to thank F. R. K. Chung (Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, NJ.), P. Erdős (Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Budapest, Hungary), R. L. Graham (Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, N.J.), D. 5. Kleitman (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass.), G. Purdy (Texas A & M University, College Station, Tex.), and D. West (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass.) for suggesting the problem, proving the theorems, and writing up the final paper. This idea of imaginary Erdős numbers is unfortunately unfunny (one must first establish some notion of negative Erdős numbers and of multiplication of Erdős numbers in order for it to make any sense; that is, the punchline has no setup), but the Acknowledgments blurb above makes up for it.
