The authors argument in the article doesnt make much sense. In order to have a Cold-War peace in an economically interdependent maritime East Asia, neither mainland China nor the US always needs to be fielding massive forces dominating the region. The mutual fear of potential (physical and economic) destruction is sufficient. Moreover, everyone knows that China was dominant in Northeast Asia through much of its history, and would laugh at the authors assertion that China has never intended to dominate the region. Furthermore, the Chinese communist regimes current territorial claim over the South China Seas goes far BEYOND the Monroe Doctrine. Americas Monroe Doctrine NEVER was a claim of possessive sovereignty over the maritime territory, but was INSTEAD a defense of the independence of the countries in the region (https://facebook/hiroaki.ikeda.526/posts/491955364155388). Chinas Nine-Dashed Line sovereignty claim over the South China Seas was first made by the Republic of China (now Taiwan) right after World War II when most of the countries in the region were still Western colonies. But now, obviously, the time and situation have changed since then. Why doesnt China readjust its old claim to fit into the new ages circumstances?
