The auto that I had taken to get back home stopped close to one of the army barracks, stuck in traffic. An army truck stood a little way ahead of us, was full of jawans with large bags, presumably for a posting in the harsh winters of the Himalayas. Their families stood waving them goodbye in the sickly orange glow of street lamps, and the traffic jam stretched out that painful moment by seconds, minutes, what might have seemed like hours to the families of the jawans. Most of them looked tired and sad. In that moment of their waiting to say goodbye, the slap on the crying little girls cheek seemed all the louder despite the noise of the traffic. The woman gave one last wavering smile towards the truck, and walked back inside the compound holding her crying girl firmly by the wrist. The traffic finally started to move, and the truck inched its way ahead into the road. ~~~ Im not saying all defense personnel do their work only because of patriotism and not in any part due to the benefits involved, but please, for the sake of humanity, do try and be grateful to them for the immense debt of gratitude we owe them - our freedom and security.
