The automated license plate reader will use GPS and pictures to determine how the long the car has been in the parking spot and if it has moved. It will replace the current chalk system, where officers mark tires with chalk on their routes. West Lafayette Code Enforcement Supervisor Rick Walker said he hopes this is the start of more technological advances when it some to code enforcement in the city. “Our hope is to modernize our technology and have the ability to pay online,” Walker said. “We’re looking at possible options, like pay as you park, where you can simply take a smart phone and add your data there and add minutes while you park.” Walker said the system allows officers to keep track of ten times more cars. The city hopes to start using the system this fall.
