The badassery is BACK. Treated myself to a little IMAX 3D action tonight with 300: Rise of an Empire. If you were a fan of the first one, youre bound to love this film for all the same reasons. This is the first (of my recent memory) film that is both a prequel and a sequel, setting up the previous 300 film with an origin story to the war, then directly paralleling it with plotlines, before surpassing the end of the first film and moving into sequel mode. The creators of the film did an awesome job drawing out differences between the Spartans story and the Athenians, using everything from different fighting styles and techniques, to different character traits and acting choices, to special effects color palettes, all while still staying true to the universe of the original. All of the cameos of the original cast members really help to maintain the illusion that youre watching these stories simultaneously, and the two lead actors Sullivan Stapleton and Eva Green carried the weight and conflict of the film effortlessly. Overall I thought the film was pure awesome, it gave me the same rush the first one did years ago in theaters. In my opinion, if someone were to ever take both of these films, tighten the edit on them, and then intercut them into the same film, it would be hands down one of the greatest stylistic action films. If you were into the first, dive back into the universe and go see it : )
