The basis of illusion in APC under the leadership of incorruptible Buhari is the overwhelming desire to seek an alternative from the massive corruption, rot and economic crisis which happened under PDP-led government. This desire for change in the absence of genuine working class alternative enabled illusion in Buhari-led APC. But where does one place the role of the most backward layers of semi-proletarian and petty bourgeois masses? In the camp of Buhari-led APC, especially in the northern Muslim regions are those who have an inverted consciousness of the crisis of capitalism. For these backward layers, the crisis of Nigerias capitalism reduces itself to the outcome of having a Christian-led government committed to the destruction of Islam and Muslims. A layer of reactionary Muslim clergy promotes this bigotry notion. The class contradiction of the society is replaced with the religious one. In the camp of PDP are also some backward petty bourgeois and semi-proletarian elements in whose mind the crisis of capitalism reduces itself to the conflict between a progressive liberal southern Nigeria and a reactionary semi-feudal northern Nigeria. This is another form of inverted consciousness which replaces classes with regions as the fundamental sources of contradiction in the society. The task of Marxists is first and foremost to not only be side-by-side with advanced layers in their struggle against PDP rot but also help them see through the APC deceit and direct them to the need for socialist reconstruction of the country. But we also need to attack the inverted consciousness of the most backward layers and counter-pose to ethnic, regional and religious sentiments, the class analysis of the society.
