The beauty about the advent of Social media for Development Communicators is that when used correctly, it can help shift perceptions. When one got here 3 months ago, there was a sense that no one knew what the EC Provincial Government was doing. Reputationally, this constituted a huge risk for the standing of the Province in the eyes of the electorate who had returned the ruling party to victory with an overwhelming mandate to Govern. Faced with a media environment which traditionally prided themselves in prioritizing negative stories at the expense of the good that the province is preoccupied with, at one tweet and one Facebook post, we are starting to utilize alternative media platforms to communicate our work. If the media pitches and do not report on the Good stories that we seek to tell we can always count on the immediacy of the social media platforms to tell our story. We post pics about what is happening in our Home of Legends and a tweet a day, a Facebook status a day is slowly changing perceptions and shifting mindsets about what the EC Provincial Government is all about. Mainstream media will always have a lions share of the news pie. However, gradually, this base is being eroded. Check the reportage on Goverment, through social networks people are starting to put their own spin on issues without being fed by the media. They even break their own stories.Radio will always be key in telling the developmental stories and we looking at alternative mediums. Its gonna take time, resources and utilizing all other media platforms that are favourable to our Good story and one day, the very media organizations that see no value in communicating our Developmental stories will find themselves in the news wilderness, where their revenue streams would have dried as we shift our AdSpend on alternative forms of media that assist in Moving the province forward. Who knows one day, we might not even need to advertise in their own publications.
