The beginning of The Strange Case of James Kirkland Pilley, my homage to H.P. Lovecraft: Edward Hawthorne had no premonition of the first disturbing and later horrifying consequences that would result from his joining the Friends of Pilley Park Garden Society. Certainly the motive of my drinking acquaintance was not pure, love flowers though he did. He wanted to engage his ebullient personality upon the membership of mostly matronly ladies and entice them toward a scheme of his to effect needed repairs on the shallow, or what was the then presumed-to-be-shallow, pond in Pilley Park overlooking which, a year before, he had purchased a Victorian house in need of repair. ... Within a few months Hawthornes ebullience was transformed into what I then thought was paranoid psychosis when he came to my office at city hall raving that the drained pond must now be refilled. His ranting resulted in the police being called and he being carted off. It also provoked my curiosity and it did not take me long in my investigations and visits to the drained pond to join him in his justifiable monomania that the city must immediately find the funds to complete the repairs on the pond and fill it with water. And there is the greatest of urgency. Certainly any more digging must stop at once! amazon/Strange-James-Kirkland-Pilley-ebook/dp/B005BVZK0I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&m=AG56TWVU5XWC2&s=books&qid=1310307234&sr=1-1
