The beginning of a project. I picked up from Wes Clark all the Valley Choir audio tapes from Fall 1973 to Spring 1989. They seem fairly complete, with the possible exception of the 1972 - 1973 school year. There are no tapes from that year even though I am quite sure I recorded that years concerts. Nevertheless, this is a remarkable archive. Trust me, there are very few high schools that have had a consistent recording program like Valley, and fewer still that still have recordings going back 40 years. So this is going to be a major project. There are 82 tapes, each about a hour long, that have to be copied in real time (or is it reel time? Mr. Clark would appreciate the pun, I am sure). Then I will have to spend some time cleaning up the recordings, but fortunately the few tapes I have copied so far have been in pretty good shape. Just about every tape has a concert program included which is a tremendous help, but it will still take a lot of time to scan and edit these programs. The goal is to make copies of these recordings available to whoever wants them. We are still working out the logistics, but the general idea is we will sell copies to support the Clark Scholarship at Valley. I want to make clear up front that I am not going to make any money from this work. I will donate my time and materials to support the Clark Scholarship. So stay tuned for further details. Like I said, this will be a big project so I do not expect the recordings will be available before March, 2015.
