The beginning of the end for YEC within evangelicalism? The other day I shared Gen. 1:6 and the following verses from the NRSV which translates raqia (firmament) as dome. I use Logos Bible software (primarily evangelicals) and they have a very literal translation of their own which renders Ge. 1:6 as, And God said, “Let there be a vaulted dome in the midst of the waters, and ⌊let it cause a separation between the waters⌋.” Even more interesting is the latest revision of the NIV in 2011. The NIV is the most widely used translation for evangelicals. Previous editions translated raqia as expanse but the latest edition has And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” This rendering also appears in the very popular TNIV. So what happens in the next generation or two to the YEC movement if younger evangelicals are caring less and less about the evolution vs. creation controversy and accepting both science and faith while their premier translations of the Bible are becoming more and more transparent in regards to ancient Mesopotamian cosmography? Where do future YEC evangelicals turn to for proof texts? Do they become, against current trends, King James Only?
