Following is the text of the statement issued by the Committee: The scientific data and precise astronomical calculations obtained indicate that the crescent of the blessed month of Ramadan for this year (1434 H., 2013 A.D.) will be born on Monday, July 8, 2012 at 07:14 a.m. (GMT); that is, at 10:14 a.m. Beirut summer time, and it will stay for an interval during which it will become visible by the aid of telescopes at the sunset in most of the regions of South America and the adjacent regions of its western coast, which are regions that share a part of the night with Europe, Africa, the Middle East and other parts of Asia. According to the jurisprudential opinion of the late Religious Authority, His Eminence, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah (ra), which says that the beginning of the month can be established when the crescent becomes visible, even if by the aid of telescopes, in any place of the world with which we share a part of the night, and since the sighting is possible on Tuesday eve (Monday night), July 08, then Tuesday, July 09, 2013 A.D. is the first day of the month of Ramadan in all the regions that share a part of the night with the regions where the sighting is possible. As for the countries situated in the Far East, such as Australia and New Zealand, Wednesday, July 10, 2013 A.D. is the first day of the month of Ramadan, for these regions do not share a part of the night with the regions where the sighting is possible.
