While people are pouring water on their head, donating to a worthy cause we lost yet another beautiful friend today to Pancreatitis. Whats that you say? Ive never heard of it! Well let me briefly explain. Chronic Pancreatitis is a debilitating disease filled with intractable pain, an increased rate of pancreatic cancer (in some people as much as 75%) and guess what, there is no cure. The closest treatment to relieve the pain is an extreme procedure (the one my 4 yr old had last year at the age 3) to remove his pancreas, spleen, appendix, gallbladder and a porition of his intestines. The procedure carries a litany of risks. My son is the youngest known patient to have the surgery so we dont have any idea of what his future will look like. So in the words of my friend John Galli, while your checkbooks are out, send the water to California and please donate to a foundation that not only researches for a cure for Chronic Pancreatitis but Pancreatic Cancer which will soon be the 2nd leading cause of cancer deaths in the US and the only type of cancer in which the survivability rates have not improved in 40 years!
