The stuffing was loose. No biggy. I carefully saved the stuffing in large garbage bags, thinking there shouldn’t be a problem since the same amount coming out would be the same amount going in. Wrong. Putting the stuffing back was a very big pain in the ass. No amount of adjusting would make the cushions smooth. I resolved to live with lumps, cushions that looked like the backs of toads but cleaner. One of my favorite artist quotes is from Franz Kline. He said terrific artists have to have the capacity to be embarrassed because painting is like hand-stuffing a mattress.(replace “painting” with whatever operandi you wish) Do artists today have the capacity to be embarrassed—to put their hearts in their work, to make a personal art, to be a fat girl? I think this is where the central battle is located, not in the repetitive sea foam of whom among us is greatest or most influential. We’ve done that. We can move on now. Raise a hand and ask a stupid question.
