* The benefits of houseplants when it comes to mental well being, increasing oxygen levels in your home and removing household pollutants. Besides adding beauty to the inside of your home or office space, houseplants also add to your mental and physical well being. However the most important addition houseplants add to your living or working space is oxygen. It takes around 15-20 average sized houseplants to see a marked difference in air quality for your home or office space. And more fresh oxygen around you means a higher level of thinking for yourself and others around you. Houseplants also remove pollutants that can build up inside your home, pollutants in the form of household gasses. These gasses such as formaldehyde, benzene, toluene, and ammonia are released from many everyday household objects. Household objects like furniture, carpets, tile, and painted walls. Houseplants also remove the gas carbon dioxide from our living spaces. Carbon dioxide is a what we exhale from the air we breathe. The benefit of carbon dioxide to our houseplants is that, the houseplants breathe carbon dioxide. In return for this carbon dioxide we give to the plants, the houseplants exhale oxygen for us to breathe in our home or office space. The other more toxic chemicals gasses that are sometimes found in homes and offices are absorbed by the plant, and through the plants processes of chemical dilution and absorption, these toxic chemicals are returned to the soil as more naturally broken down compounds and elements. When it comes to choosing houseplants for air purifying, the more green in the scene the better. Choosing plants with large green and leathery feeling leaf surfaces will help ensure that more air is being absorbed and filtered by your plants. Since plants breathe mostly through their leaves, misting the leaves and keeping them away from hot dry air will help ensure that the plants leaf cells are functioning at a healthy level. Another factor to consider when choosing your houseplants for air purifying is the beauty and ambiance they help provide to your indoor environment. Having beautiful flowering plants and greenery around work spaces has been shown to improve productivity and overall attitude at work. The same benefit in positive attitude adjustment brought on by plants applies to you and others inside your home. Giving a toddler or young child a task of caring for the houseplants in your home will give them a sense of caring and accomplishment in helping to keep the plants alive. This also helps them learn about living things, how nature works, and may give them a new hobby or interest to share with you and explore. The many curiosities that still remain about plants will naturally cause a person to expand their thoughts they are having at the time in new directions. Simply by taking a break and using some of that time to look at the plants and naturally wonder, then getting back to the task at hand. There are some plants that are better at air filtering than others. Plants such as Sansevieria, Ficus, Peace Lily, Spider Plants, Dracaena, and Elephant Ears. These plants are given a high rating when it comes oxygen output and air filtering, but there are a tremendous amount of other plants to choose from. With Winter just around the corner here in the Upstate, many of us will spending more time indoors over the next few months. However, being indoors more will have a less marked effect on your mental and physical health with houseplants by your side.
