The best place around Mama Lors , here is the write up about this quaint little place... cheap Eats: Mama Lors Café in Webster doesnt skimp Depending on your orientation, Mama Lors Cafe could be your last stop before you leave Monroe County or your first. The historic Webster building sits smack dab on the border between Monroe and Wayne counties, across the road from the Union Hill Fire Department and just a few more strides away from the Union Hill Post Office. Regardless of your starting point or final destination, Mama Lors is a satisfying stop, especially if you appreciate authentic comfort foods in a plain, unpretentious atmosphere. I like to think of it as a progressive diner in a part of Webster that few people know about, though owner Lori Rosenzweig bristled when I used the word diner to describe her 2-year-old restaurant. Were more upscale than that, says Rosenzweig, aka Mama Lor, a title carried over from her 23-year administrative career as the mama hen at Anheuser-Busch. She quickly brought over the iPad to show me beautifully plated food pictures to prove me wrong, giving all the credit to her chef, Tony Tuchrelo. Still, when the doors open at 6 a.m., the coffee mugs look like a summer camp collection, the waitresses affectionately call customers honey, and the soup of the day comes with a couple packets of saltines, the term seems appropriate. There are three rooms with distinct moods. The front room is the smallest and has lots of windows, light and heat. The middle room is privvy to the happenings in the kitchen and is the pulse of Mama Lors, with obligatory diner counter seating, several tables and a view of a large television. A rear fireplace room was not in use on my lunchtime visit. Mama Lors is ambitious on many fronts. It serves breakfast and lunch seven days a week, with daily specials. Four out of seven days, it serves dinner entrées and specials and gourmet pizzas (which can also be ordered for pickup). You can even have a glass of wine or beer with your food, and its one of the few places that still serves plain old milk. In the summer, it is a pit stop for chicken barbecue takeout. Cakes and pies are made in-house. The service is personable and sincere. The list of specialty sandwiches and burgers is long, with two standouts I will try when I have other mouths to help me and I have time for a nap afterward. One is the Motherloaf, an open-faced meatloaf sandwich that includes mashed potatoes, onion rings and gravy in its attempt to defy gravity ($8.95). The other, pictured here, is The Violator, a half-pound hamburger that shares a hard roll with bacon, Swiss cheese, chili sauce, peppers and onions, a potato pancake and a fried egg. It is secured from toppling over with a steak knife ($12.50). To date, no single stomach has been able to finish this burger in one sitting. I ordered healthier items on the menu, though both of them — a supposed cup of thick, sturdy white chicken chili with cannelini beans ($3) and a salad of romaine, grilled chicken, fresh apples, pecans, blue cheese and dried cranberries ($9.25) — were nearly as daunting in size as The Violator. I left the restaurant with the next days lunch packed in Styrofoam. Both were fresh-tasting and delicious. Confession: I also ordered something not so healthy, yet irresistible: a wedge of chocolate cake with chocolate chips and chocolate icing and a layer of cream cheese ($4.85). Even when the waitress cut the piece in half and boxed the other to go, I managed only half of what was on the plate. Dinners are the peak of comfort dining: macaroni and cheese, smothered chicken, lasagna, roasted turkey. Call it a diner or call it something else, Mama Lors is generous in flavor, food and spirit.
