The bible says “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.” (Eccl.12:13) We all fear something & whatever we fear controls us. Some fear men, poverty, death etc. But, how do we fear God? God said this concerning Job: “…He is blameless--a man of complete integrity. He fears God and stays away from evil." Job 1:8. Hence, to fear God is to hate what is evil. There are two main reasons for fear: we fear because we don’t want to be hurt and the other is because we don’t want to hurt. The first is born out of terror (negative) while the other is born out of a response and understanding for that thing (positive). The fear of the Lord means a reverence for God, willingly striving to please Him in all things, not out of compulsion but because we have come to understand His love & grace. If God’s grace truly abides in us, it only produces reverence for God. We just want to avoid hurting Him. We just want to fear Him - fearing to say what God doesn’t want, fearing to live in secret sin, fearing to put anything above Him in our lives. Those who know God best fear Him the most! To fear God is to love Him so much that we avoid hurting Him, and that is wisdom. “Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.” 2 Cor. 7:1
