The biggest difference between the movies of today vs the classic - TopicsExpress

The biggest difference between the movies of today vs the classic silver screen is that in those days movies were made by artists. Actors didnt make 20 million per picture and took pride in their craft. Now movies are made by accountants and all we get are adaptations of comic book heroes and inane comedies all designed to make money and if they are thats a bonus. We get remake after remake and every TV show is now turned into a movie. The plots now revolve around CG effects and the plot is secondary. Compare the modern Sherlock Homes with the incomparable classic with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. Today you see the same group of comedians turning out the same buddy movies. Join SNL and then you graduate to movies. Occasionally a great movie like the Artist (from France) comes out. The name directors pick the best scripts and stars to ensure a successful movie, not necessarily a good or great movie just good box office. Consider Ron Howard, Kevin Costner and Mel Gibson have each won an Academy Award for best director and Alfred Hitchcock, Sidney Lumet, Stanley Kubrick, Howard Hawks, Cecil B DeMille, Akira Kurosawa and Stanley Kramer amongst others won zero. The best movies and series are on cable now. Hollywood is broken and with large publicly traded companies controlling movie making the golden age is now the tin age. Fortunately we still have the rest of the world turning out thought provoking, quality films. Unfortunately you see our blockbusters over there siphoning money back to Hollywood and perpetuating the cycle.
