The bill, known as AB 789, takes aim at some of the most horrific methods commonly used to kill animals once they have been caught in traps. Amongst these are drowning, injection of toxic chemicals, including nail polish remover, into the bloodstream of trapped animals, and chest-crushing, the practice of stomping on an animal’s chest to destroy its inner organs. These incredibly disturbing practices are often inflicted upon animals that have already been trapped for hours or sometimes days. They do nothing but inflict further pain and suffering on animals that are already agitated and deprived of food, water and mobility. In addition to outlawing some of the most horrific techniques of killing trapped animals, the new law would require a size reduction in certain types of traps, known as Conibear traps. Conibear traps often crush animal’s bones, including their spines, resulting in extreme suffering and death. The traps, which are currently allowable at up to 10 inches long, would not be allowed to exceed 6 inches on land. Furthermore, warning signs would be required in public areas where Conibear traps are used, helping to reduce the number of accidental pet deaths that commonly occur with these traps. Trapping, in itself, is an inhumane and outdated method of dealing with pests. This new bill will help to ensure more humane ways of dealing with trapped animals, and will also help encourage alternative methods to dealing with pests. Furthermore, it will decrease the number of unintended, “collateral” injuries and deaths of companion animals that accidentally stumble upon traps meant for wild animals. Urge California governor Jerry Brown to sign this important bill immediately and therefore help end cruel trapping methods.
