The bittersweet tale of a child prodigy Ten-year-old Leng Ran - TopicsExpress

The bittersweet tale of a child prodigy Ten-year-old Leng Ran from Fuzhou, Fujian Province, has become quite a buzz on social media in #China. Leng took the National College Entrance Examination, or #Gaokao, this year, scoring a rather impressive 574, according to a report in the local daily Southeast Express. Leng’s score is higher than the minimum required by most of the major #universities in Fujian. The achievement has meant the lad’s being hailed as a child #prodigy, and his track record so far is impressive. Leng took just three years to complete what is a six-year primary school course and then took just one year to wrap up junior high school. At the age of 8, he appeared for the middle school entrance exam, and is now eyeing a fast-track entry into college. However, despite all these accolades, Leng now finds himself disappointed. “I could have done better”, he said, almost bursting into tears, when asked about his Gaokao score. The reason for that? Leng hoped he could secure high enough marks to get through to his preferred institute: The University of Science and Technology of China. Unfortunately for him, the university recently raised its cut off score for such young geniuses. On social media, netizens have been encouraging young Leng to look at the silver lining. “Hey son, if you go to college that early, you would not be able to date girls!” @Huashangyingxiangwangpeng. “There have been so many similar cases. Those who go to colleges this early end up finding it extremely difficult to adapt to the environment. They always have problems getting along with other students; so they always end up miserable. So I think it’s better not to do something ahead of your age. Of course, there are exceptions,” @Daningkanshijie.
