The book ‘The Last Manchu’ edited by Paul Kramer piques my inquisitiveness into reading Diana Preston’s ‘A Brief History of The Boxer Rebellion’. This book in turn lures me to go through Sir Charles Bell’s book “Portrait of a Dalai Lama – The Life and Times of the Great Thirteenth” which I finish reading last night. I was always curious about (a) the 13th Dalai Lama’s relationship with the Qing Dynasty and specifically (b) his personal opinion about the Empress Dowager Tzu Hsi. I gain some insight on my first query from the section on foreign affairs but it seems very little is known about the relationship between the Great 13th and the Empress Dowager Tzu Hsi. However in his ‘Last Testament’ or ཁ་ཆེམ the Dalai Lama had earnestly acknowledged that the Emperor and the Empress Dowager had treated him “well beyond measure” during his stay in Peking. However what baffles me is the 13th Dalai Lama’s uncanny power to presage future events.
