The boy asked his teacher, “Do I have to do these assignments? Are they required to pass the class?” What is this boy truly saying? He is saying, “I want to do as little as possible, but still not fail.” The boy’s heart is not in the class – or in the subject. If the boy loved the subject he would be anxious to learn everything and he would enjoy the assignments. Begrudgingly doing what he must so that he will not fail tells me the boy has other things he places above the class. When I hear people say -- “Do I have to know or do that? Is it salvational?” -- I hear that boy in them; and they should hear it, too.
