The brick portion of the Slave Quarters building was constructed - TopicsExpress

The brick portion of the Slave Quarters building was constructed as an Out Kitchen, c. 1732-37, and the clapboard section was added a couple of decades later. The brick pattern on the side facing the courtyard and the mansion is Flemish bond -- each row consisting of alternating full-width bricks, or stretchers, with end-on bricks, or headers, with the next row in the opposite order to create a diamond-like design. The remaining two brick sides are in American bond, in this case one row of headers for every three rows of stretchers.
