The campus of Throop Institute, 1908 and today. The Institute was founded in Pasadena in 1891 by local businessman and politician Amos G. Throop. Its initial location was on Chestnut between Fair Oaks and Raymond; the location is now occupied by St. Andrew’s Grammer School. By 1910, the Institute had shed its vocational school, its preparatory program had split off to form the Polytechnic School, and the technical college had moved to California Blvd. where in 1920 it settled on its current name, California Institute of Technology. In addition to the 1908 and now shots I have included a 1910 Sanborn map of the area showing the location of students shown and the direction of the shot; it also gives a nice glimpse of a lost section of Pasadena; all that is left is the row of workers’ apartments on the northwest corner of Raymond and Walnut.
