The capital of Laos looks very much like a provincial Thai town, so small it is. Its funny to see hammer-and-sickle banners, advertising for a Russian mobile network, a virtually non-existent Mekong (its dry season now) and a refreshingly candid description of their main attraction, the Patuxay Arc (from a closer distance it looks even less impressive, like a monster of concrete - I would agree!) The guidebook claims the Arc was built in 1962 from the cement that had been originally purchased in the US for the construction of a new airport :-)
