The carp have been spawning on Shefford & District AA stillwaters and members should continue handle carp with care and return them quickly to the water to avoid any undue stress. The carp at Broom Lake have been feeding well during the last week suggesting many have completed their spawning activities. Andy Richwood had two excellent days towards the beginning of the week landing 8 carp on his first trip, followed by another 7 carp the next day with the majority of the carp being commons to upper doubles. As temperatures rose later in the week most of the carp could be seen cruising on the surface and Tim Keane set up a rod to tempt one off the surface as the sun raised the temperature to 27C. However, Tim was surprised that his other rod fished on the bottom screamed off and resulted in a 23lb 4oz common. A final reminder that Broom Lake will be closed to members and their vehicles from midnight Friday 20th June until 11am Sunday 22nd June. During this time only participants of the Dean Johnson memorial match will have access to the lake and any members wishing to fish the river must leave their vehicles in the car park. A few tench were caught at Willington Lake during the week, but the most notable catch was an upper double figure carp caught by a member lure fishing for pike. The carp was hooked fairly in the mouth. Later in the week the carp were seen spawning over several days and the reed planting on Sunday was brought to a halt when carp started to spawn in the area where the reeds were being planted. The newly planted reeds are clearly visible being protected by mesh cages staked out into the lake. With the new river season starting on 16th June, several members were out on the rivers at midnight. Kevin Williams targeted the mill pool at Little Paxton and landed five bream to 8lb and a 4lb chub during the first few hours of the season before sport started to slow as the day progressed. However, his bed of feed had attracted a shoal of bream and as darkness fell they began to feed and by 4.30am Kevin had landed over 25 bream on pellets before deciding to reel in his rods to get some well earned rest.
