The center of the high-school robotics universe will be housed in the Monroe High School gymnasium on Friday and Saturday, June 21 and 22, when robotics teams representing nearly 40 high schools converge on the facility for the Michigan Advanced Robotics Competition at MHS. The event is free to attend and the public is invited. The event is expected to attract more than 400 participants and chaperones. Besides being a wonderful event for participants and spectators alike, the event also is a good boost for the local economy because so many of the teams stay in local hotels and motels, eat at local restaurants and buy various supplies from local merchants. Qualifying matches start at 2:30 p.m., Friday, June 21, and continue to about 7:30 p.m. Matches pick up again at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 22, and continue until about 1 p.m. Championship matches are scheduled for 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., on Saturday. “These students and their advisors have made a significant commitment to robotics that even during the summer they love their sport enough to drive many miles to compete with other schools,” said Kyle Christensen, Monroe Trojan Robotics advisor said. “Everyone involved has put hundreds of hours into their machines, practicing for this event. Even if someone is not familiar with robotics, this is very colorful and interesting to watch -- for children, too.” Michigan teams are from: Allen Park, Armada, Ann Arbor, Auburn Hills, Bloomfield Hills, Canton, Capac, Clawson, Dearborn, Detroit, Dundee, Goodrich, Grand Rapids, Grosse Pointe Woods, Hamtramck, Holland, Lake Orion, Livonia, Madison Heights, Milford, Monroe (3), Northville, Novi, Okemos, Ortonville, Pontiac, Rochester Hills, Sterling Heights, Swartz Creek, South Lyon, Taylor, Temperance, Troy, Walled Lake, and West Bloomfield. Out-of-state teams are from: Toledo, OH; Rochester, NY., and Milwaukee, WI. The Monroe County teams represent Monroe High School, Dundee High School, Bedford High School, Jefferson High Schol and Monroe County Community College.
