The ceremony of disbandment of the Cameronian Regiment (Scottish - TopicsExpress

The ceremony of disbandment of the Cameronian Regiment (Scottish Rifles) in 1968, a regiment dedicated from its foundation to the defence of liberty. Named after the great Covenanter preacher, Rev Richard Cameron, the regiment was formed to defend the open-air Coventicle services of the Covenanters of the 1600s, thousands of brave lowland Scots who risked their lives by worshipping in the open air rather than submitting to the tyranny of the Stuart kings who claimed spiritual lordship over the Church and who tried to enforce under pain of death the English system of episcopacy and worship upon the presbyterian Scottish people. The Cameronians fought bravely in defence of these principles of civil and religious liberty throughout their long history, always marching at the quick pace of 140 beats per minute, and always standing on sentry duty, armed with rifles at the four corners of the church during a church parade and service. More than ever, in our own day we must stand in defence of liberty for all, pray for our military forces and work for a just society where tyranny has no place, and the rights of all people are respected. With the increasingly militant extremist Islamist threats both at home and abroad in places like Iraq, let the witness and memory of the Covenanters be our inspiration!
