The chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, “It is not - TopicsExpress

The chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, “It is not lawful to put them into the temple treasury, since it is the price of blood.” And they conferred together and with the money bought the Potter’s Field as a burial place for strangers. For this reason that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. Then that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: “AND THEY TOOK THE THIRTY PIECES OF SILVER, THE PRICE OF THE ONE WHOSE PRICE HAD BEEN SET by the sons of Israel; AND THEY GAVE THEM FOR THE POTTER’S FIELD, AS THE LORD DIRECTED ME.” Matthew 27:6-10 (NASB) Judas’ treason money was used to buy the potters’ field as it was blood money. Both Judas and the high priests were trying to clear their conscious of blood money. Judas ultimately went and hung himself and the high priests continued on with their trial and crucifixion of Jesus. Guilt is not enough. Judas expressed his grief to the high priests. However, he never asked Christ for forgiveness. It is not enough to feel guilt and remorse. We must repent and turn from our sins 1 John 1:9: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Our confession is to Christ and not men. The high priests also did not want the money, but it was for a far different reason. They were going to stick by the Jewish Law and could not have contaminated money. However, the violated Jewish laws all along the way in seeking the crucifixion of Christ, people react differently to guilt and remorse. We need to seek Christ to relieve us of our guilt and remorse.
