The child is upset. Hes fussing. Hes been here too long. His mama is hurrying, trying to get everything on her list. She tries to calm her son but hes having none of it. Hes tired of riding in the cart. Maybe hes hungry or needs a nap. Hes about to snap and his poor mama is losing her peacefulness. Enter Tiny Dancer (7). She appears by the side of the cart and smiles at the little guy. She waves to him. He smiles back. TD begins jumping up and down, making silly faces, engaging the young fellow. His happy is coming back. She pats his hand and begins speaking to him. I dont know what she says, but whatever it is, he likes it. I dont intervene. This is her domain. This is what she does. She calms cranky children. **************************************************************** The little girl sits at the top of the slide, unable to release her fear and scoot to the bottom. Her father crouches below, offering encouragement, but his small person holds back. Enter Tiny Dancer (7). She lives for these moments. This is her calling. She sidles up to the youngster and sits beside her. TD offers an engaging smile and some encouraging words. She takes the little ones hand. And laughing, both of them push to the bottom of the slide. I dont know how she does it. She finds these children, be it at the park, the grocery store, or a restaurant, and instantly injects some sunshine into their day. Our oldest daughter has this ability -- occasionally -- but not like TD. Tiny Dancer is instant warmth and happiness. Perhaps its her small stature. Or her calming voice. Or her gentle demeanor. Or some combination thereof. But whatever it is, shes got it. She is a human lullaby. She is the Baby Whisperer.
