The chocolate day was invented by the French in 1995. The first peoples to begin cultivating the fruit of the cocoa tree were the Olmecs, the ancient inhabitants of Central America. They called it “the food of the gods.” The ancient Mayans believed that their cacao drink, which is made from grain and the so-called “food of the gods,” was endowed with mystical properties. The Spanish conquistadors who first brought it to Europe, dubbed the treat “black gold” and used to enhance physical strength and endurance. Prominent women considered chocolate an aphrodisiac. Amongst them, Mother Teresa also had a passion for chocolate claiming that only chocolate could ignite the fire of passion.
