The city is planning to install a $2 million high-speed Internet project along the planned 20-mile elevated rail transit system line that will run from West Oahu to Ala Moana Center, the citys information technology director told PBN Friday. The project, which involves installing 1,000 pairs of fiber to provide broadband access to the areas near the 21 rail stations, is expected to begin installation this year. Our goal is to make broadband ubiquitous roughly a half-mile radius from the stations, Mark Wong, IT director and chief information officer for the City and County of Honolulu, told PBN. There will be free Wi-Fi at the stations and in the trains. To go along with this broadband initiative, the city also is looking to build mobile wayfinding apps, which would give people directions to various points of interest such as bike-share and car-share programs, restaurants, schools, buses, shopping malls and museums.
