The city of Detroit is looking to shift the publicly owned water utility to private hands. Water has been cut off to families who have been unable to pay ever increasing bills. The National Nurses United union plan to “declare a public health emergency and demand a moratorium on the unprecedented water shutoffs in Detroit.” They are also calling for a Robin Hood Tax to be applied to financial speculators as an alternative to austerity cuts. Tax the rich and give water to the poor. How has it come to this in the richest country on earth?
