The city of Glasgow has to be our main thought tonight, and - TopicsExpress

The city of Glasgow has to be our main thought tonight, and particularly the people in that city. What a dreadful and no doubt horrific scene some of these people have had to contend with in the last 24 hours. Surely, oh surely, our thoughts and prayers are for the eight families who tonight are trying to come to terms with the sudden loss of loved ones. And also those who are at the bedside of fourteen seriously injured people who mean the world to them. And what about those who still don’t know? We cannot put words into a situation like that! I have no doubt there are people out there asking how a loving God can allow something like this to happen. We just don’t know! But one thing we do know is this. And that is that we live in a broken world with broken people…and all because of sin. But God tells us that there is a way now open that allows us to be restored back into a perfect and blessed and personal relationship with him. And it’s all because he has come into this world in the person of Jesus, and he alone has opened up this way back to him…by believing in Jesus and his finished work on that cross at Calvary. And not just that, but God also tells us that the whole creation, which currently groans under this weight of sin, will one day be restored to perfection as well. For now though, we mourn with those who mourn in Glasgow, we stand side-by-side with those who are truly concerned for the wellbeing of their loved ones, and we share what can only be an absolute gut-wrenching distress for those who must be totally beside themselves tonight not knowing if their partner in life, or their son or their daughter is still in there. This is a true and very real time for prayer. And let’s not forget every member of the emergency services in Glasgow who must be living and working through their worst nightmare…even now..yet doing it in the most professional manner. In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, our worlds can also be turned upside down, for many different reasons. Jesus is the only safe, secure and steady refuge in that kind of situation. Let’s pray that somehow, out of the darkness and destruction of this devastation in Glasgow, that there will be light and meaning, and that God will be glorified through people turning to him and trusting in him.
