The city of Santa Cruz, California, on the northern edge of Monterey Bay, south of San Francisco, was founded on 14 September 1776, the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Like many cities in California, it was named for the feast day on which it was founded. The first church was one of the famous California missions founded by the Franciscan fathers. It was destroyed in various fires and earthquakes in the 19th century, but a smaller-scale replica was built in 1931. See the exterior and interior shots below. The parish is still in existence, using the new church, which was built around 1895. When Fr James was a student at the University of California, Santa Cruz, 1967-71, he attended this church. Sometimes the Newman Student Ministry also celebrated Mass in the Mission chapel. In the little museum, old vestments from the late 1700s and 1800s are on display, along with a chalice used by Blessed Fr Junipero Serra, OFM, the founder of many of the missions.
