The city’s Beautification Commission honored 62 property owners who made landscaping a priority this summer during Tuesday’s City Council meeting. Mayor Pro Tem Michael Taylor and the Sterling Heights City Council congratulated each award winner individually during the ceremony as photographs of their respective properties appeared on a large screen inside council chambers and on Sterling Heights Television (SHTV). The Beautification Commission presented awards in four categories: businesses, multi-family complexes, churches and single-family homes. “These awards are for property owners who go above and beyond to make sure their businesses, multi-family complexes, churches and homes uphold the highest possible standards in terms of landscaping.” Mayor Pro Tem Taylor explained. “We’re fortunate to have so many people who care about the appearance of their property. Their efforts help make Sterling Heights an attractive place to live, work and raise a family.” Beautification Chairman Aaron Wawrzyniak said that the commission received nominations over a five-month period prior to determining this year’s winners, including “Best of the Best” honorees in four nomination categories. Residents and Beautification members nominated addresses of properties worthy of consideration. “We reviewed and selected only superior properties that had a ‘WOW!’ factor when seen from the curb,” said Wawrzyniak. “The winners were chosen based on overall beauty, aesthetics and artistic use of color.” In addition to a certificate acknowledging their efforts, award winner attendees received a $25 gift certificate, courtesy of Eckert’s Greenhouse, located at 34051 Ryan Road, Sterling Heights.
