The coastline of Ireland is dotted with strange little buildings that stand defiantly on prominent locations overlooking the sea. Bearing the exotic name ”Martello Tower”, they are particularly noticeable in Dublin. They were built in the early part of the 19th century so as to make ”Fortress Ireland” impregnable to invasion from the all conquering forces of Napoleonic France.
