The cockroach and losing my religion. Upon the insistence of a particular individual, I will now unlock a dark episode from my past, which only some of you are aware of. It is a tale of how a cockroach made me lose faith in the traditional concept of God and religion when I was 18. I had returned home a little drunk in the wee hours of the morning. As I sat in the toilet puffing on a cigarette and emptying my bowels, a cockroach entered the sacred arena of solitude. It must have been young and in the peak of health, for I remember it darting from one corner to another with enviable acceleration. Being terrified of roaches, I stood on the bowl and observed the creature scurrying about my porcelain kingdom with impunity. And that was when I experienced an epiphany. I looked up to the heavens (or rather ceiling) and asked God, "Who in his right mind would want to create something like this?" Then as I grew older and more blasphemous, I placed myself in the shoes of the Creator. So there I was, this omnipresent being, wielding indescribable power... all alone. So I start to create... and I make Earth and then, Man. I give the humans all sorts of desires but warn them not to act upon these "evil" temptations, give them mortality and illnesses, bonds and attachments (which would then be severed), and throw in a couple of natural catastrophes as well... just to prove that I exist and must be worshiped. And I do this in the name of love. I, the human, found the above a tad bit contradictory and perhaps even a little sadistic. And when I witnessed the atrocities that man was capable of, including killing in the name of God, it was difficult to feel a sense of awe for the one who created them. But I was blessed to discover spiritualism, which saw the same things in a different light. And to that man, I am eternally grateful. (I apologise if this post is a bitter pill for some. I mean no disrespect.)
